Most people driving I-15 through Utah County have no idea what's sitting seven miles up Payson Canyon.

Grotto Falls — sometimes called the Grotto Trail or Grotto Canyon — is one of the most accessible and genuinely rewarding short hikes along the Mount Nebo Scenic Loop Road. It is 0.6 miles round trip, almost completely flat, dog friendly, and appropriate for young children. The trail follows a small stream through a shaded canyon, crosses it on timber log bridges, and ends at a waterfall cascading into a natural rock grotto with a small pool at the base.

It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to hike. Plan to stay longer once the kids find the water.

This guide covers everything you need to know before you go — including how to get there from both Payson and Nephi, what to bring, when to visit, and why this trail keeps coming up for families living in and moving to Nephi, Mona, and Central Utah.

Trail conditions and road access vary by season. Always confirm current conditions before heading out. The Nebo Loop Road closes in winter due to snow.

What it is

A short, shaded canyon trail that ends at a waterfall.

Grotto Falls is a short, easy out-and-back trail in Payson Canyon, sitting inside the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest along the Mount Nebo Scenic Byway. It's the kind of trail you can fit into an afternoon without making a project of it — pack a snack, pile in the car, and you're back by dinner.

The walk itself is the quietly memorable part. The trail moves through a shaded canyon under pine and aspen, with a small stream running alongside. You cross the water on a few timber log bridges before the canyon opens up into a small natural grotto. The waterfall slips down a layered cobblestone rock face into a shallow pool at the base — small, but exactly the kind of thing kids remember.

It's worth knowing about because it's genuinely family friendly without being a tourist crush. Dogs are welcome, there's no fee, and it's accessible spring through fall. Consistently one of the most popular short hikes along the Nebo Loop for families with young children — and one of the easiest day trips out of the Spanish Fork-to-Nephi corridor.

"This is one of the most genuinely kid-friendly hikes I've come across in the corridor. The log bridges alone are going to be the highlight for most kids ages 2 to 8."

Pack list

What to bring.

Always bring

  • Water for each person
  • Water shoes or sandals in summer (kids will want to wade in the pool)
  • Sunscreen
  • Snacks

Family specific

  • Baby carrier or backpack for toddlers — strollers won't work well on the log bridges
  • Change of clothes for kids — plan for wet feet
  • Leash for dogs

Optional

  • Camera — the grotto and waterfall are genuinely photogenic
  • Light jacket — the shaded canyon can feel cooler than expected, even in summer

Trail conditions can vary. Check current trail and road conditions before heading out, especially in early spring when snow may still be present higher on the Nebo Loop.

Directions

How to get to Grotto Falls.

From Payson — North Entrance

Take I-15 to exit 250 toward Payson Main Street. Turn left on 100 North. Turn right on 600 East — follow signs for the Mount Nebo Scenic Loop. From the mouth of Payson Canyon, drive approximately 7 miles up the road. The Grotto Trail trailhead will be on the left side with a parking area. Look for the trail sign.

From Nephi — South Entrance via Nebo Loop

From Nephi, take Highway 132 east toward the mountains. Follow signs for the Mount Nebo Scenic Loop Road heading north. The Grotto Falls trailhead is accessible from the south end of the loop. This approach offers its own scenic drive through the forest and is a good option for families coming from Juab County.

Local Realtor Note

"If you have time, consider driving the full Nebo Loop from one end to the other — Payson to Nephi or Nephi to Payson. It is one of the most underrated scenic drives in Utah and you can stop at the Grotto on the way."

With kids

Tips for visiting with kids.

The best time to go is early morning on weekends to avoid crowds, or weekday afternoons, which tend to be quieter. The parking area is small and fills fast on summer Saturdays — if you can shift your trip by a few hours, it's worth it.

The log bridges are a highlight. Most kids love crossing them, but very small children may need a hand. Slow down here — let them take their time, look down into the stream, and feel like it's their adventure rather than yours.

At the waterfall, the pool at the base is shallow and kids can wade. Bring water shoes and a change of clothes and plan for wet feet. Even if you only meant to "look," they will end up in the water. That's the trip.

A baby carrier works well for toddlers who aren't walking confidently yet. The trail itself is manageable, but the log bridges are narrow for strollers and not a great fit even with an off-road jogger.

"Go early on weekends — this trail is popular and the parking area fills up. A weekday afternoon in summer is ideal if your schedule allows."

Why it matters

Why this trail keeps coming up for Central Utah families.

Grotto Falls represents something that is easy to miss when evaluating Central Utah as a place to live: genuinely accessible outdoor activity that the whole family can participate in, within 30 minutes of Nephi and accessible right off the Nebo Loop.

The trail is not a bucket-list hike. It is a Tuesday evening hike. A Saturday morning hike. The kind of thing that becomes part of the routine when you live in the area — somewhere you end up four or five times a summer without ever planning to.

For families considering a move to Nephi, Mona, or anywhere along the Spanish Fork to Nephi corridor — this is part of the honest picture of what daily life actually looks like here.

"This is the kind of place that doesn't show up in the listing photos. But it's part of what makes living here different."
