A locally owned specialty soda shop on Main Street in Nephi — creative dirty sodas, fresh local cookies, and a menu of named drinks the staff know well enough to pick one for you.
I asked the lady behind the counter to just give me a surprise. Then I had to get back in line to find out what she gave me.
It's called the Brylee with Cream. It is now my permanent order at Bev's Hot and Cold Beverages in Nephi — and it replaced the Dr's Order, which I was convinced was my forever drink until that happened.
This is what Bev's does. You think you know what you want until someone behind the counter knows better.
The place itself
What Bev's actually is.
Bev's Hot and Cold Beverages is a locally owned specialty soda shop at 673 South Main Street in Nephi — not a chain, not a franchise, just a Nephi original doing something Utah does better than anywhere else in the country. You drive Main Street through town and it's right there, and once you've stopped once you tend to keep stopping.
The menu centers on specialty dirty sodas — drinks built from a base soda with creative combinations of syrups, creams, and mix-ins. It sounds unusual to anyone who didn't grow up in Utah and it makes complete sense the moment you taste it. The drinks have names with personalities: the Mormon Mojito, the Brylee, the Brown Cow, the Shipwreck, the Dr's Order. Each one is a specific combination, and the staff know the menu well enough to recommend the right one if you describe what you like.
Fresh cookies from a local baker round out the menu for anyone who needs something alongside their drink. That's the whole operation — drinks, cookies, people who know their regulars. It's the kind of small business that tells you more about a town than a population number ever will.

The lineup
What our family orders.
My order is the Brylee with Cream — the result of asking for a surprise and liking it so much I had to get back in line to find out what it was. Before that it was the Dr's Order, which I was loyal to until the Brylee happened. The menu has a way of doing this to you. You think you've found your permanent drink and then you try something else.
My wife's order is the Mormon Mojito, every time without variation. My daughters get the Brown Cow, which they've settled on and stuck with the same way my wife has. My son orders the Shipwreck — specifically and exclusively because it comes with a little gummy shark at the bottom. He has never once considered ordering anything else.
The full family cost: four kid-sized drinks and two large 44oz drinks for under fifteen dollars. That's six drinks — all custom, all made to order — for less than the cost of two drinks at most coffee chains. This is the part that genuinely surprises people from outside Utah when they visit for the first time.

The East Coast perspective.
The dirty soda shop is a Utah phenomenon — deeply embedded in the local culture in a way that doesn't fully translate until you've experienced it. Coming from the East Coast, where coffee shops are the default social gathering space and the drink menu centers on espresso, the idea of a specialty soda shop as a community institution is foreign. But the function is identical: a local gathering spot, a consistent order that becomes your signature, a place you bring guests to show them something about where you live. Bev's fills that role in Nephi the way a neighborhood coffee shop fills it in a city.
When our family visits from the East Coast, Bev's is the first stop — not the canyon, not the steakhouse, not the rodeo. Bev's first. It answers a question about what life here actually looks and feels like in a way that a real estate listing or a town guide never quite can. If coffee is more your speed, The Haven is a few blocks north — but the soda shop is the one that explains the town.
